How should you learn for the H2 Economics exam

The exams are coming again and that means it’s time to start preparing! But then the question always follows: “How can I best prepare for my exams?” There are many similarities between the method of preparation for many of the courses, but there are of course differences in the approach. This blog is specifically about the preparation for the Economics exam.

Prepare for the Central Exams after the last test week

All school exams are over and now you can fully focus your attention on preparing for the Central Exams. The first step is to take stock of all the material that you need to know for the Economics exam. Don’t you just have to know everything that was tested during the school exams? No. Many of the topics that you have covered over the past years will, of course, be included in your Economics exam, but not everything. For example, schools can handle a number of optional subjects that do not return to the exam. If you do not have a clear overview of the material that will be returned to the exam, look at the exam program and the syllabus for the Economics exam.

Once you have an overview of all the material, it is important that you make a plan. It is recommended that you have repeated all the material once before the start of the May holiday, but be realistic. Economics is of course not the only subject that you have to prepare. In addition to repeating the material, it is of course very important that you practice the material. You will be tested on how well you can apply the substance. Often there are old exam papers in your schoolbooks that belong to certain subjects. Purchasing an exam bundle is also a very good idea, in which old exam assignments are sorted based on subjects. Practice this after you have learned the subject matter.

Learn tips

The last few weeks before the start of the final exams have started. What can you do best? If the planning is successful, you have already repeated all the material once. If this is not the case, try to learn/repeat all remaining material in the first week of the holiday.

The most important thing during the May holiday is practicing. Applying the material is very important in Economics and therefore also practicing old exams. There are a number of important things you should get out of practice:

* Which subjects often appear in the assignments?
* Which topics do I manage and which do I not?
* What kind of questions are asked?

In addition, it is also very important that you take the time to analyze how you have made the old exam assignments. In particular, look at:

* Which questions did I answer correctly and which not?
* Why have I not answered certain questions correctly?
     Did I get the question?
     -I understand the substance?

If you did not answer the question correctly because you did not master the material properly, it is, of course, important to go back to the material and repeat it again. After you have repeated the material, make a number of old exam assignments on that subject to test whether you now have a better command of the material. However, remember that many of the answers in the correction rule are “examples of correct answers.” Other answers are therefore possible, but the answers in the correction rule are the most obvious and the best.

However, if the error lies in not understanding or misunderstanding the question, then it is important to properly analyze what you thought the answer was and the answer that was in the correction rule. Have you perhaps read about something or is something else going on? Take a good look at what is in the question and what an answer was expected from you. What indications are there in the question from which you can deduce which direction you should take in your answer? Use this evaluation to improve your answers. It is often a good idea to start your answer by repeating the question. In this way, you often use all the concepts that you must include in your answer and you also force yourself to read the question correctly.

Practice entire exams

Do you have to practice whole exams in one session in preparation for the final exams?
The short answer: Yes.
The long answer: It is certainly advisable to practice a number of exams by taking an entire exam in one session. This is important for a number of reasons. Firstly, it is important that you practice with exercises for three consecutive hours. You are, of course, already used to taking long tests, but not three-hour tests. Working concentrated for three consecutive hours is something you have to get used to and you can also train to a certain extent. It is also important that you practice the exam approach to see what works best for you. Is it better to complete the assignments in the order in which they sit the exam, or do you make the exam better if you do the “easy” assignments first? If you take the entire exam in one session, you can try out what works best for you. And last but not least, it is of course important that you practice a mix of all kinds of exercises and topics. In the exams the different topics are mixed together and taking an entire exam is the best way to practice preparing for the actual exam.

The day before the exam

Tomorrow is the day, your economics exam! What can you do about preparation on the last day? Go through the parts you find difficult again and then take some time to relax. In general, it is not advisable to make many practices exercises the day before the exam. Why not? Firstly, because you have already spent a lot of time preparing for the exam last week. The last day no longer makes a big difference. Secondly, because a few or a few tasks are not a reflection of your knowledge and skills. If you have just chosen a wrong assignment that is (too) difficult and that is going badly, it is not conducive to your self-confidence.

You have learned a lot recently, made many exercises and specifically addressed your gaps. You have prepared well for the exam. Now it’s time to relax so that you can start your exam well-rested tomorrow.

The day of your Economics exam

Make sure you are rested and have breakfast normally. Check that you have all the things that you can use during the Economics exam. Don’t forget to bring a Dutch dictionary with you. You don’t always need it, but the dictionary is sometimes useful if you have doubts about the question. Also don’t forget to bring your normal calculator, since you are not allowed to use a graphing calculator during the economics exam.

Good luck with the exam!
